Understanding service line coverage in homeowners insurance is essential for protecting yourself from potentially significant expenses. Service lines are the underground pipes and wiring that connect your home to the public utility services, such as water, sewer, and electricity. These lines are typically buried deep underground and can be prone to damage or failure over time. Issues with these lines, like breaks or clogs, can lead to severe problems such as water backups and significant damage to your property, often resulting in costly repairs.

Service line coverage is designed to cover the expenses associated with repairing or replacing these essential connections when they fail or are damaged. For example, if the water line connecting your home to the municipal water supply breaks, it could result in water pooling in your yard, turning it into a muddy mess and potentially causing water damage to your home. Similarly, a failure in the sewer line can cause backups that lead to unpleasant and unsanitary conditions. Without service line coverage, the costs to fix these issues can range from $6,000 to $10,000, and sometimes even more, depending on the extent of the damage and the necessary repairs.

Adding service line coverage to your homeowners insurance policy can provide peace of mind and financial protection against these unexpected and substantial repair costs. It ensures that if something goes wrong with your service lines, you won’t have to bear the full burden of the repair expenses. By understanding the importance and benefits of this coverage, you can make informed decisions about your insurance needs and better protect your home and finances from unforeseen issues.

“There’s a number of service lines outside of our homes. The, the most common ones that we want to protect are the main lines, and these are usually buried eight to 10 feet underground. It connects the house to the utility. So there’s a water line and then the most common one that’s covered by your policy is the one that’s connecting your house to the sewer system. Damage to that or failure to that can result in water backups. It can essentially turn your front yard into a bowl of oatmeal because all that water is, it’s not escaping, it’s just pooling. And it’s an extremely costly repair. If you have driven around your neighborhood and you’ve seen somebody’s yard dug up and you see mounds of dirt from the house to the sidewalk Most likely they had their service line repaired and, and I would say you’re probably anywhere from the range of six to $10,000 in costs.”
